Dear Parent and Students,
As we close the month of September, I am happy to report that the 2018-2019 school year is off to a fantastic start at North Valley Middle School. Students and staff have settled in and work diligently every day with a focus on achievement and responsibility. We are eager to share several new and exciting things happening at North Valley Middle School.
The first thing I would like to share is PACTS. Last year, I challenged a student group to develop a program which would serve as a social contract for how we treat one another as well as a promise to strive for success. PACTS stands for Perseverance, Accountability, Commitment, Truth, and Service. Each characteristic carries with it expectations for both students and staff members. Each week, we are teaching a lesson on one of five characteristics. Additionally, students will receive one grade for each of the five characteristics in their E-Time course. E-Time is graded on a pass/fail basis. The grade your student receives for each of these characteristics will not affect his or her GPA. I have included the grading rubric which will be used.
Second, on Monday, October 1st, we will hold an assembly to kick off “Off-Line October.” During the assembly, we will challenge students to abstain from using social media for the month of October. Off-Line October is an initiative started by students in Littleton, Colorado. This is a challenge by choice and those students and staff members participating will do so on their own free will. I have attached an informational flyer. You may also go to https://offlineoctober.com for more information. “The challenge is meant for people to realize the importance of human relationships and the happiness that can come from direct human interaction.” Regardless of your student’s choice, we encourage all parents to talk to their student about responsible use of social media, limiting the volume of social media usage and the benefits of human interaction.
Finally, our beautiful building continues to receive upgrades as they put on the finishing touches, both inside and out, of on phase one of construction. You may have noticed the substantially enlarged parking area for staff members. This has greatly reduced the number of cars being parked on the 3rd Street and 2nd Avenue making them the preferred locations for drop-off and pick-up. As always, please be mindful of bus loading zones.
After school tutoring has started. It is held every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:40-4:40. If your student is unable to walk home from tutoring, please make sure they are picked up promptly at 4:40. Thank you and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
