Our schools are 100% compliant with State Immunization Law which means that ALL of our students have met the requirements for immunizations! Many school districts in Colorado do not come close to meeting this high standard. THANK-YOU for protecting our students from dangerous diseases – some today’s parents have never seen!
100% compliance refers to “required” vaccines as determined by state law. Additional vaccines are “recommended” and available to parents to further protect their children. The schools role by law is to make parents aware of these recommended vaccines. One such vaccine is to prevent Meningococcal disease. This vaccine is recommended for preteens and teens beginning at 11 years of age, with a booster dose by 18 years of age. Meningococcal disease is potentially very devastating and can cause death or disability in a single day. For more information about this and other recommended vaccines, follow this link:
As a cost savings measure to reduce the school district’s budget, members of the Weld RE-1 Board of Education, during their regular meeting on April 18, 2012, approved a new academic calendar for 2012-13. The new academic calendar is a change from the traditional calendar for the past several years.
The new academic calendar is a Four-Day School Week Calendar. Please find listed below special points of interest regarding the new calendar:
- School will be in session four (4) days per week – Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday,
- School will not be in session on Mondays,
- The first day of school is August 14, 2012,
- There will be a full week off in November and December,
- Students will return January 3, 2013 from winter break,
- The last day of school will be June 6, 2013, and
- The school day will be begin at 8:05 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m.
There are many positive attributes of a Four-Day School Week. Many schools that have moved to a Four-Day Week calendar have experienced substantial gains in student academic performance in the first and second years of implementation (Mitchell, 2006). In addition, some schools have experienced a decline in student absenteeism rates; improved employee attendance; and decreased student discipline issues. Many schools who moved to a Four-Day Week calendar report that parents who initially were not supportive of the calendar did not want to return to a five-day week calendar after the first year of implementation. Students and parents enjoy the longer weekends that provide for more family time and they liked that dental and medical appointments can be scheduled for the day that students are not in school.
Before the end of this school year, school district personnel will be working on strategies to help alleviate concerns about a Four-Day School Week. Issues such as child care and breakfast/lunch for students on Mondays will be discussed. In addition, please expect more information regarding transportation, athletics, class schedules, etc... If you have questions, please feel free to call Dr. Jo Barbie, Superintendent of Schools, 970-737-2403 or e-mail at barbiej@weld-re1.k12.co.us.

Building principals will use the system to phone parent/students with schedule changes and/or special events at the school.
The superintendent's office will use the system as a district-wide tool to phone parents/students regarding school emergencies such as school closures due to inclement weather.
It is important the parents/students keep building secretarial staff apprised of changes in home phone number and other contact numbers.
